Singing The Blues!...
Singing The Blues!
You can see two powerhouse vocalists at The Apex next month, when soul-blues star Jo Harman joins Grammy-winning Mike Farris, for a double header with a great live band.
Jo Harman is widely regarded as one of the most exciting blues/soul/roots artists to emerge in Europe for decades. Her 2013 debut album, ‘Dirt On My Tongue’ received remarkable critical acclaim, making various ‘best of’ lists and awards. Craig Charles on BBC 6 music considered a track “contender for best soul record of the year'” and Huey Morgan on BBC R2 said that 'sometimes you hear a voice that leaves you speechless”.
In 2014, Jo’s album, ‘Jo Harman and Company – Live At The Royal Albert Hall’, earned her 4 nominations at the British Blues Awards, including best singer (which she won) and best songwriter (runner up). She was described by The Daily Mirror as “the finest female soul blues singer in the UK”, while Rag’n’Bone Man declared she was “one of the UK'S finest talents.”
Whether singing her own emotive songs or her personal take on well-known standards, Jo Harman’s soul-fuelled shows range from hard-driven rock to intimate, heart-warming ballads.
Evocative, spiritual, and thoroughly entertaining, the blue-eyed soul of vocalist Mike Farris is truly something to witness. Farris gives all – and then some – at each and every goose bump inducing performance.
“I truly believe that Mike Farris is one of the great artists of today. He sings the truth with a depth of feeling that warms my heart and touches my soul.” - Bob Harris
Hailing from Tennessee, Mike mixes Stax soul, New Orleans gospel and shuffling Southern blues, with a smouldering vocal delivery, reminiscent of Sam Cooke or Otis Redding. Mike become the first artist to receive a Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album, for his ‘Shine for All the People’.
'Supersized voice filled with the electricity of Saturday night and the godly grace of Sunday mornings'. Rolling Stone
Jo Harman and Mike Farris are at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 9 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from www.theapex.co.uk or 01284 758000.
