Paul Zerdin at the Apex...

For more than 25 years the London-born ventriloquist has been wowing audiences across the globe with his cheeky brand of stand-up puppetry and his ‘sponge family’ – including peppy tween Sam, demanding newborn Baby and old man Albert.

Paul has charmed the dingy basement crowds of London’s comedy circuit and the high-rolling gamblers of Las Vegas. He’s performed for the Queen at the Royal Variety and once, he was heckled by a golden retriever.

In 2015, Paul hit the big time in the USA when he was crowned winner of ‘America’s Got Talent’. As well as collecting the million-dollar prize, the talent show boosted Zerdin’s Stateside status, and he scored his own Las Vegas residency.

Paul is now touring the UK with his show ‘Hands Free’, he calls it “a fresh, funny, fast-paced show – and a bit edgy. I describe it as stand-up comedy where I happen to use puppets.”

With the lines of reality blurred, it’s sometimes confusing even for Paul to know who’s actually running the show. To make sure he remains in charge, Paul will be bringing along his bodyguard Roger – who claims to be ex-CIA - to help him keep Sam, Albert and Baby in order, as well as a rather annoying urban Fox that has been following him around!

When asked about the new puppets, Paul explained; “The idea with Roger is, when I did “America’s Got Talent” they gave me a bodyguard, and I can’t get rid of him. He’s paranoid and thinks everyone’s out to get him and me. The Urban Fox stowed away in my luggage when I was packing and couldn’t get out, so he’s now involved in the show. I’ve never had any animal characters, and I’ve always liked the idea of having one.”

The gang survived the 2020 lockdown with Paul…. Just about, but they cannot wait to be out and about again. As well as Zerdin’s hilarious characters, the show features Paul giving us a glimpse into his own reality, demonstrating what it’s actually like to be able to throw your voice in everyday situations where anything and everything can talk back!

With masterful puppeteering, animatronic wizardry and comedy - Paul Zerdin is at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 6 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from or 01284 758000.
