Wednesday World Series...

Put some heat into your winter nights, with three exciting and diverse gigs at The Apex on biweekly Wednesdays.

First up, Omar Puente Quintet take to the stage on Wednesday 27 January. Internationally renowned for his masterful performances in a variety of musical styles, world class violinist Omar Puente is nothing short of a true virtuoso. Having maintained close links with traditional Cuban music, classical genres and jazz, his most recent album ‘Best Foot Forward’, is rich with energy, colour, creative arrangements and originality.

‘It's a fiery and exuberant set, touching on Africa, Cuba and England as it progresses.’ – Songlines Magazine

‘Omar Puente’s contribution to 20th and 21st century violin playing has now become legendary. His generous nature, his commitment to good music, his enjoyment of life and his respect for his colleagues are all characteristics which make him a true violin great’ – Nigel Kennedy.

Two weeks later, on 10 February, you can see pioneering vocalist Najma Akhtar. Najma has established herself a place in World Music history by introducing subtle Jazz nuances to the traditional genre of the Ghazal (South East Asian poetic ballad) and Sufi styles. Even though her music remains rooted in the traditional music of her ancestral home, her versatility as a writer and composer can be seen through her diverse body of work and her artistic collaborations with some of the world’s most influential and credible musicians, including Nina Simone, Jah Wobble, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Basement Jaxx, Jethro Tull, Philip Glass and many more. She has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums, the most recent ‘Five Rivers’ includes imaginative interpretations of compositions by Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Bryan MacLean and Donovan and explores her Indian-British roots by encompassing a plethora of genres from World Jazz, Rajasthani, Delta Blues, Psychedelic, Rock and Folk, to Sufi, African Blues and Irish Celtic.

Finally, on 24 February, Yiddish Twist Orchestra bring their deliriously danceable mix of Klezmer, West Indian Calypso, mambo, surf guitar, classic Yiddish songs and English beat rhythms. The highly-acclaimed Orchestra is an all-star band whose music pays homage to the genius of Willy Bergman, the unjustly forgotten beatnik funkateer who got the slums and salons on both sides of the water dancing to that pounding London beat, ‘Der Shvitz’.

"Surf rock guitar, jazzy horns, calypso, the twist ... a gleefully maverick spirit" - fRoots

"A blazing brass section, two nifty connoisseurs of the electric guitar, and a drummer with rhythm deep in his bones... Yiddish Twist are one band not to miss." - Roots Of The World

Each act will play two reduced-capacity, socially distanced shows, to ensure your safety and remain within government guidelines. Tickets are £19 per show or £48 for all three.
