Big Band Jazz at the Apex...
Regarded as the finest jazz spectacle ever, the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 is revered by big band fans worldwide, and recordings of that historic event continue to sell today. It’s thanks to Benny that jazz was elevated from the dance halls, clubs and dives to the concert platform.
All the Carnegie Hall repertoire will be featured, including the classics ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’; ‘Don’t Be That Way’; ‘Body & Soul’; ‘One O’Clock Jump’; ‘China Boy’; ‘Big John Special’ and other fabulous Fletcher Henderson, Mel Powell and Eddie Sauter arrangements.
Ex-Jools Holland arranger and one of the finest clarinet players in the world, Pete Long has assembled the cream of London’s big band players, ready to provide all the passion and frenzy of the original concert. An added bonus comes in the form of famed American singer Joan Viskant, hailed by Ray Charles as reminding him of Doris Day. Making a rare UK visit, she replaces Martha Tilton in the original concert.
In keeping with the original Carnegie Hall concert the All-Star Goodmen Orchestra will be 100% acoustic, to provide an extra sparkle to the music.
The concert will be at the Apex on Monday 10 February at 7.30pm.
