Hits from the Blitz At The Apex ...

Hits from the Blitz: We’ll Meet Again, at 2.15pm on Thursday 4 December at The Apex, is a special Christmas matinee performance of the “feel-good” 1940’s show, as featured at Dame Vera Lynn’s Charity Gala Nights.

Famous war-time tunes and “sing-a-long” songs are brought to life by the singers and multi-instrumentalists of the Five Star Swing band; which features Simone Smith, from the latter days of the Ivy Benson Orchestra, and Chris Smith (Jnr), composer and arranger for Glenn Miller’s Brother, Herb Miller. Five Star Swing’s excellent vocalists and musicians re-create the vibrant sound of the Big Band era, with costumes for added authenticity and style.

Band leaders and performers, Chris & Simone, have for the past seven years been successfully touring their shows and bands – “Swing ‘n’ Sinatra”, “In The Mood”, “Five Star Swing”, “The Big Band” and now “Hits from the Blitz”. Along with Dame Vera Lynn’s War Veteran’s Charity Balls, other clients have included Blenheim Palace, Kew Gardens, Chelsea Flower Show, The Savoy Hotel, Imperial War Museum, The Treasury, Westminster Cabinet War Rooms, BBC TV Children In Need, and private functions for: Tony Blair, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, Terry Wogan, John Prescott …and many more.

Chris’s compositions and arrangements are frequently played by Jazz FM, Capital Radio and the BBC Radio Big Band, and as a piano/trumpet player, he has appeared on BBC Breakfast TV, Top Of The Pops, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and The Royal Variety Show. He has toured extensively with the Herb Miller Orchestra (Glenn’s Brother), as well as Jazz festivals throughout the world.

Vocalist / saxophonist Simone has recorded with Paul Weller and was featured alto saxophone solo on the Paul Merton Show. She was also lead alto saxophone for the New Squadroniares and latter days of the Ivy Benson show band. Trombone player, Mike Innes, has recorded with Shirley Bassey, Jools Holland, Gary Barlow, Elaine Paige, Roy Castle, Harry Secombe and with the Ronnie Scott’s big band. Mike’s television appearances include; Top of the Pops, TFI Friday, Jools Holland, Steve Coogan, A Song for Europe, Noel’s House Party and MTV.

The show features songs from Glenn Miller, Vera Lynn and other forces favourites, with a repertoire including In The Mood, April in Paris, Old Devil Called Love, and of course We’ll Meet Again.

The show at The Apex is on Thursday 4 December at 2.15pm. Tickets are £15, please ring the box office on 01284 758000 or see the website - for details.
