Our Bury St Edmunds Whitsun Fayre builds on 2021 success...

A popular Our Bury St Edmunds town centre event is set to return this month offering a free admission fun day out with crafts, plants, street food and artisan produce on sale alongside family entertainment.

Last year’s Our Bury St Edmunds Whitsun Fayre was the first such event to take place in the town centre following the pandemic and with careful safety measures in place. Usually held over the Whitsun bank holiday, this year it will be one day only as the bank holiday has moved to extend the following weekend as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

For 2022, organisers are building on the success of last year with more stalls and carefully managed entertainment areas that still have a strong focus on minimising any Covid infection risks.

Our Bury St Edmunds Chief Executive Mark Cordell said: “Last year’s event was the first we’d organised post-pandemic and it was wonderful to see people enjoying themselves among the stalls and attractions. This year, although it’s a very busy week with all the events leading up to the Jubilee, we’re building on that and will welcome a number of new traders among the stalls on Cornhill and Buttermarket. Around a third of those taking part have not been part of this event previously.”

Many of the attractions will be in the area usually used by the twice-weekly market but an additional flowers, crafts and artisan produce market will be held on Angel Hill. The event will also see fairground rides as well as local astronomers providing games and entertainment for youngsters including making model planets, while also giving advice about telescopes and viewing the night sky. Street entertainment will include a magician and a stilt walker.

The Our Bury St Edmunds Whitsun Fayre is a free-admission event which takes place on Sunday 29 May between 10am and 4pm. It’s organised by the team behind the town’s Business Improvement District (BID).
