Our Bury St Edmunds countdown to Christmas begins...
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Bury St Edmunds town centre. The traditional opener to the festive season - the Our Bury St Edmunds Christmas Lights Event – is now less than a week away. And launching on the same day is the Our Bury St Edmunds Twelve Days of Christmas Trail which is being run in partnership with HSBC UK and has 14 prizes with a total value of £500 to be won.
The lights will be switched on for the first time on Thursday November 18 as part of a special afternoon and evening of free entertainment in the town centre for shoppers and families. Organised by Our Bury St Edmunds, which operates the Business Improvement District (BID), it offers a host of stalls and attractions in as Covid-safe an environment as possible. The town’s decorative lights – including six brand new standalone illuminations - will be on as the event opens, allowing the crowds to visit all the different areas to view them as darkness starts to fall.
Chief Executive of Our Bury St Edmunds Mark Cordell said: “We have had a fabulous response from charities, community groups and many other stall-holders who’ve booked pitches at the Christmas Lights Event. Many of them are regulars at this very special night of the year and I know they will have their stalls looking wonderfully Christmassy. If you are planning some gift shopping or just want to listen to some traditional Christmas music then this is the perfect event.”
The very popular annual Christmas Charity Market will host stalls from local good causes and community organisations and a number of town centre businesses will also be participating. Street entertainment will include stilt walkers, a magician, Victorian carol singers and the Salvation Army band playing Christmas music. A variety of food stalls and a funfair will complete the evening. Santa’s sleigh along with elves and the man himself will also be making an appearance.
The Our Bury St Edmunds Christmas Lights Event runs from 3pm to 8pm. It will also include live broadcasting by community station RWSfm 103.3. The Twelve Days of Christmas Trail starts outside the ‘Bury Santa Experience’ at arc shopping centre and users need a mobile phone capable of sending and receiving texts, or a smart phone to take part.
