Our Bury St Edmunds seeks school superheroes...

The ‘superheroes’ of schools in and around Bury St Edmunds are being sought as the end of term approaches and pupils look to thank school staff for the past year. And this summer is the first time that students have been able to give the Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card as a present or put forward someone from their school to win a Gift Card as well as a cash prize for their class.

A national campaign by Miconex, the company behind the Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Cards is calling on families to nominate their School Superheroes. These could be teachers, teaching assistants, catering/lunchtime staff, administration teams, caretakers, coaches or volunteers who have gone the extra mile. Families can nominate a school superhero by visiting

Meanwhile the Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card from the Business Improvement District (BID) organisation allows the recipient to spend it in one of 60 different outlets in the town centre – making it the perfect thank you present. More than £40,000-worth of the cards have been bought since its launch last year. Restaurants such as Casa and The One Bull have been among the most popular establishments for users to spend the card.

Mark Cordell, Chief Executive Officer at Our Bury St Edmunds, said: “It takes five minutes to nominate someone in a Bury St Edmunds school, whether that’s a head teacher or teacher, a sports coach, a teaching assistant or school office staff. The difference these people make in our children’s lives shouldn’t be underestimated, supporting families, keeping school safe and making school a positive place to be.

“The prize on offer is fantastic. The School Superhero could win a £50 Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card to treat themselves to a meal out, a film or show, or whatever they fancy from our fabulous independent shops and bigger brands. There is also so much a school could do with the £250 cash prize, from new books for the library to sports kit. I would love to see a School Superhero from Bury St Edmunds being recognised and rewarded for their efforts.”

The Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card has a partnership with Collection Pot, enabling families to easily collect for school staff digitally, with the collector or recipient able to redeem the sum with an Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card, offering a covid-secure way to collect money, and giving the teacher choice in their gift.

Colin Munro, Managing Director of Miconex added that the School Superheroes campaign is a chance to thank school staff and be in with a chance of winning a local prize that supports the community. He commented: “During the pandemic we’ve seen even more examples of school staff showing extraordinary support to families, from making home learning fun to taking the time to pick up the phone to see how a child is getting on at home. The School Superheroes campaign is about saying thank you to people who work in our schools. We look forward to seeing lots of deserving entries for this campaign from Bury St Edmunds.”

The Our Bury St Edmunds Card can be purchased online or cards can be picked up at shops in the town centre including Lorfords, Vinyl Hunter and Buy the Light, with the giver then adding a sum of their choice digitally. The full amount does not need to be spent all at once, and it’s simple to check online how much balance is left, where it’s previously been spent and where it’s accepted.
