Christmas tree returns to light up town centre street...

Shoppers visiting The Traverse in the heart of Bury St Edmunds this year will once again enjoy a traditional Christmas tree during the festive season. Four years after a devastating fire led to extensive re-building of the Cupola House, the street is looking forward to celebrating its first Christmas without scaffolding in place.

Traditionally there has always been a tree in this part of the town centre, complementing the town’s other main Christmas tree on Angel Hill. But since the Cupola House fire in 2012, building work in the area had meant it hasn’t been possible to put up a tree in its usual place until it was complete.

Now the Business Improvement District (BID) organisation Ourburystedmunds and Blackthorpe Barn on The Rougham Estate, have selected a top quality Norway Spruce to take pride of place.

It was personally chosen by Ourburystedmunds Chief Executive Mark Cordell who said: “Selecting this tree for The Traverse has been one of the most pleasing tasks of the year because I know what a difference it will make. I’d like to thank Blackthorpe Barn for their continued support, which I know businesses who have borne the brunt of the fire’s aftermath very much appreciate. They kindly donated a tree for several years before the fire and it’s wonderful to have this generous gesture made again.”

The return of a Christmas tree has been welcomed by the businesses operating in The Traverse. Sheila Barnard, proprietor of Auntie Pam’s Sweet Shop said: “Having The Traverse back to its festive best this year is absolutely wonderful. Although we’ve had to make the best of our circumstances as work continued after the fire, this year it really will feel Christmassy and I can’t wait to see the tree in place.” The selected tree will be prepared for display and installed in The Traverse ahead of the Ourburystedmunds Christmas Lights Switch On event on November 17. The town and its trees will light up at 7pm on that day, amid a full afternoon and evening of festive fun.
