Shop local in Bury St Edmunds during Independents’ Week...

Shoppers in Bury St Edmunds next week are being encouraged to visit one of the nearly 300 independent businesses the town has to offer as part of the annual ‘Independents Week’ celebrations. It started as an initiative that encouraged people to support independent shops on 4 July – known as Independents’ Day – but is now promoted by the Business Improvement District (BID) organisation Ourburystedmunds for a whole week.

This is the fifth year that the town has embraced what began as a nationwide initiative, encouraging shoppers to buy at least one item from a local small business. Bury St Edmunds has almost double the number of independent businesses than the national average at nearly 60%.

Chief Executive of Ourburystedmunds Mark Cordell said: “When we survey visitors to the town the variety of shops is always very highly rated by them – and our independents contribute significantly to that mix hence this celebration of them.

“I hope lots of people will make an effort to support these businesses during Independents Week, and of course throughout the year to allow our town centre to thrive. There’s also an opportunity to see most of our Independent businesses by taking part in our weekly walks which leaves Intersport in Whiting Street at 10am every Thursday, as part of our ‘Retail Therapy’ initiative.”

Independents Week in Bury St Edmunds runs from Monday 29 June until Sunday 5 July. More information about what Bury has to offer can be found by visiting the Ourburystedmunds website or downloading the app.
