Mayhem and merriment ensue in Goldsmith’s classic comedy!...

Impeccable comic timing, exuberant classic costume and dynamic direction converge in this playful production of Oliver Goldsmith’s ever-popular play, She Stoops to Conquer.

With similar styling to Shakespeare’s classic mix-up comedies, this delightful story in which mishap and misunderstanding mingling to create a heart-warming and hilarious evening of classic, comic theatre, this piece has been a popular hit since its creation in 1771. Coming to the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, Tuesday 13 – Sat 17 May, She Stoops to Conquer, which has inspired numerous screen adaptations, pivots around a plethora of misunderstandings…

Marlow stutters and quivers around educated and well-to-do young women, so when his father sets him up with his old friend’s charming and intelligent daughter Kate, he is totally tongue-tied. But Kate Hardcastle’s attraction to her nervous suitor leads her to embrace a new and rather different persona to win him over… Meanwhile playboy Tony Lumpkin plays a practical joke on the unsuspecting Marlow, leading to social disarray and confusion.

Creative Cow, the company who brought us their revival of Charley’s Aunt last summer, present one of the most popular Georgian comedies, revelling in mishap and misunderstanding this production is sure to be a heart-warming and hilarious evening of entertainment. We are also delighted to welcome back Leonie Splisbury (Maria Bertram, Mansfield Park 2012/2013) as the feisty Kate Hardcastle alongside the bright new talent of, Suffolk actor, George Jennings playing the cripplingly shy Marlow.
