Serving and Celebrating Together...

Serving and Celebrating Together

On Thursday 16 May 2013 a unique event will take place in Bury St Edmunds.

Hosted by St Edmundsbury Cathedral there will be a conference of Anglicans and Methodists entitled ‘Working Together: An Exploration of the Sacramental and Ministerial Relationship between our two Churches’. In the light of the Covenant between the two churches, the day of theological reflection and dialogue will focus on how they serve and celebrate together and how the churches can do more in the future.

The Revd Dr David Cornick, General Secretary of Churches Together in England, will chair the day and the keynote address will be given by the Right Revd Christopher Hill, Chair of the Church of England’s Council for Christian Unity and Bishop of Guildford, and the response will be given by the Revd Gareth Powell, Assistant Secretary of the Methodist Conference. The national ecumenical officers from both churches will also be in attendance.

‘This is the first time that we have gathered together for discussion and reflection in this way,’ comments Canon Peter Mortimer, one of the organisers of the day. ‘We have much to share and much to learn from each other in our joint ministry to the people in the communities we serve.’ The event is organised by Suffolk Anglicans and Methodists, an ecumenical group which was formed in 2010 to build relationships between the two denominations.

The day will include group discussions and a plenary session including response to questions raised by participants. Lunch will be provided at Trinity Methodist Church, Bury St Edmunds. The day concludes with Eucharist/Holy Communion in the Methodist tradition at which the Right Reverend Nigel Stock, Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, will preach and the Revd Graham Thompson, Chairman of the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church, will preside.
