Love Singing? Chance to a be a Cathedral chorister
St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds is recruiting choristers and would love to hear from young people, girls or boys, aged 7-18, who would like to join one of its choirs. Applications are welcome from children attending any school in or near Bury St Edmunds. All that is needed is a passion for singing, a love of learning and the enjoyment of a challenge!
There is an audition to join the choir. ‘We look mostly for potential and a love of singing,’ comments Richard Cook, Acting Director of Music. ‘Being a chorister is a hugely enriching experience. It is about being part of a close-knit team, whilst receiving a first-rate musical education and getting to perform in the beautiful setting of the Cathedral.’
Auditions can be scheduled at any time. At the audition potential choristers are asked to sing a simple hymn or carol of their choice and participate in some straightforward ear tests. Being a fluent reader with good concentration is important.
All new singers spend their first year 'learning the ropes' and continue to learn and improve as they go along. Please contact Richard Cook, Acting Director of Music, to find out more about the opportunities on offer by emailing adom@stedscathedral.org

The Church of England has recently revised its guidance on singing in places of worship. St Edmundsbury Cathedral is working towards a phased re-introduction of singing by limited numbers of choristers, though congregational singing is still not permitted.
