Themed tours of St Edmundsbury Cathedral...

The tour guides at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, are offering a series of themed tours to enable local residents and visitors the opportunity to find out more about Suffolk’s Cathedral and to enjoy refreshments in the Cathedral’s restaurant, Pilgrims’ Kitchen.

The first tour is on Saturday 2 May at 10 am and is called ‘The Glory of Stained Glass’. This tour will give a detailed insight into some of the Cathedral’s magnificent Victorian stained glass, concentrating on the glass by Clayton and Bell in the Nave. The windows on the north side of the Cathedral tell the stories of the Old Testament, including Adam and Eve, Noah and Daniel with the lions. Those on the sunnier south side tell stories from the New Testament starting with the angels appearing to the shepherds and including the Easter imagery.

‘These tours give a great chance to find out much more about the Cathedral than you would find out on a casual visit,’ comments Sarah Friswell, PR Manager at the Cathedral. ‘We hope that they will appeal to locals and visitors alike.’

Tickets for the tours cost £5 per person and include a hot drink in Pilgrims’ Kitchen at the end of the tour. Please book by calling into the Cathedral Tourist Information Point on Angel Hill (open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 3 pm or Sunday 11.30 am to 2 pm).

The tour series continues on Saturday 6 June with a tour themed on Magna Carta, in this 800th anniversary year, and on Saturday 4 July with an American Connections tour. The Guides also offer daily tours of the Cathedral at 11 am (except Sundays).
