Celestial City created in the Cathedral...

An exciting art installation will transform St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, into the ‘celestial city’ from Pilgrim’s Progress from Saturday 18 October.  Part of an ongoing series of art exhibitions designed to encourage children to respond artistically to a spiritual theme, this exhibition is entitled ‘Hopes and Dreams’. Also on display will be a series of large puppets depicting the characters from John Bunyan’s book, Pilgrim’s Progress. All the artworks have been made by Suffolk school children. The exhibition lasts until the end of October.

‘This exhibition is the culmination of a year’s work to mark Cathedral’s centenary,’ comments Helen Woodroffe, Children’s Education Officer at the Cathedral. ‘We have been using the theme of pilgrimage throughout the year and the themes of Pilgrim’s Progress provide great material for children to respond to artistically.’

Visitors are welcome to view the exhibition during the normal opening times of the Cathedral. Stewards will be on hand and programmes will be available. Admission is free.

Also on Sunday 19 October at 3.30 pm the Cathedral will host a special service of Evensong which will include a focus on education in the Diocese. As part of that service, a cheque will be presented which will help support children’s work in the Diocese. This money is a share from the profit from the Reflections Flower Festival held at the Cathedral in July.
