Opportunities for young musicians at St Edmundsbury Cathedral...
Thanks to the generosity of the Derek Marsden Memorial Fund, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, is able to offer, for the first time, an Organ Scholarship to a young organist who will work with the Cathedral’s two Organists and gain practical experience in organ playing and choral direction. The Derek Marsden Organ Scholar will be allowed practice time on the Cathedral’s marvellous 2010 Harrison & Harrison Organ, and the precise duties and timetable will be worked around the suitable candidate’s skills and educational timetable.
James Thomas, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, said, “An increasing number of cathedrals now offer Organ Scholarships to enable young organists to gain experience. Most of these are for Gap-year or Post-graduate students, but we are delighted to be able to offer a scholarship to someone who will probably be in the Sixth Form so they can gain excellent experience at an earlier stage.”
All potential organists should contact James Thomas on 01284 748739 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Organists must be at least Grade VI standard or equivalent.
As well as the organ scholarship, the Cathedral has a vacancy for one Choral Scholar (tenor or countertenor) who will sing with the Cathedral Choir at all of its services. Auditions for this vacancy will take place on Thursday 17 July from 4 pm.
The Cathedral’s Youth Choir, the St Cecilia Chorale, is also looking for more singers, of all parts, in school Year 8 or above. The St Cecilia Chorale meets to rehearse every Wednesday evening and sings Evensong monthly on a Tuesday, as well as (from 2015) a termly Sunday morning service.
Singers interested in either the Choral Scholarship or the St Cecilia Chorale should contact James Thomas. James said, “We have about 130 singers in our choirs and we are always happy to hear from anyone who enjoys singing. This Choral Scholarship and the vacancies in the St Cecilia Chorale provide a perfect opportunity for singers to develop their voices whilst having also having fun.”
Further information about all of these vacancies, and about the Cathedral’s other choirs, is available on the Cathedral Website, www.stedscathedral.co.uk.
