Passion for Poetry – a celebration
On Friday 8 March St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, will host an evening of poetry, music and drama to celebrate its recent poetry competition on the theme of ‘Our Mother’.
Over 300 entries have been received for the competition which was open to all ages, with many of the entries coming from local school children.
A panel of judges will choose the winners, who will then be invited to read their winning poem in the Cathedral on 8 March and receive a prize.
The prizes have been sponsored by Waterstones and Suffolk magazine. Included in the evening programme, which commences at 6.45 pm, will be music by the Kirbye Consort and drama by young people from the Theatre Royal. Admission is free.
‘We have been overwhelmed with the creativity of people entering this competition,’ comments Sharron Stowe, Cathedral Arts Co-ordinator. ‘The theme was chosen to link with the fact that it is Mothering Sunday on 10 March and this theme seems to have really sparked the imagination.’
The poetry evening and competition is part of the work of the Edmund Centre for Arts and Theology, a new study programme set up in 2012, following a marathon poetry read by the Dean of St Edmundsbury, the Very Reverend Dr Frances Ward, at which she raised funds to begin this exciting project.
On 8 March, news of the next poetry initiative will be announced.
