Approaching Easter at the Cathedral...

The start of the most sacred week of the Christian calendar is marked at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, with the procession of palms on Palm Sunday, 13 April, at 10.00 am marking Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem at the start of the first Holy Week.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (14,15 and 16 April) of that week, the Very Reverend Dr Frances Ward, Dean of St Edmundsbury, will explore the theme ‘The Wild Patience of God: Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier’ with a service and address at 7 pm each day.

On Maundy Thursday, 17 April, the traditional Solemn Eucharist of the Lord’s Supper with address starts at 7 pm and is followed by the procession to the Altar of Repose and a Vigil until midnight.

The Passion Play, a dramatic representation of the last hours of Jesus’ life, organised by Churches Together in Bury St Edmunds and District, will start at the Cathedral on Good Friday, 18 April, at 10.30 am. This is followed by the Three Hours meditation from 12 noon, which includes the Liturgy of Good Friday and addresses. At 4.00 pm there is a special service for children.

This year, for the first time, the Easter Vigil will be kept on Saturday 19 April, starting at 6.30 pm, with the blessing of the Easter Fire and the First Eucharist of Easter.

Easter Day, Sunday 20 April, will be celebrated, in a Cathedral filled with Easter flowers, at 8 am, 10 am and 3.30 pm.

Other services continue as usual but always check the website www.stedscathedral.co.uk or telephone 01284 748720.
