Canon Theologian retires...

Canon Theologian retires

On Sunday 20 October the congregation at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, will bid farewell to Canon Chris Burdon, Canon Theologian. Chris has been one of the team of residentiary clergy at the Cathedral since July 2007. He leaves the Cathedral in October with his wife Rosemary as they retire to Essex.

Reflecting on his time in Suffolk, Canon Burdon comments, ‘It has been a great privilege to spend these six years in Bury St Edmunds: my ancestors lived here for several generations, and it's a lovely town to live in today. Based at Bury, but working mainly with priests and lay ministers across the diocese, I continue to be impressed by the commitment and thoughtfulness of so many in the churches of this county as they endeavour to live the way of Christ.’ He goes on to say, ‘The Cathedral community has been a great support of friendship to Rosemary and me, and as we go back to Essex I shall long treasure and think of that beautiful building - coming to life early each morning as people gather at the altar, welcoming its visitors through the day, and echoing to such beautiful music.’

The Very Reverend Dr Frances Ward, Dean of St Edmundsbury, comments, ‘As Canon Chris retires, the Cathedral community is coming to terms with what we will miss. He has preached with theological depth, and contributed significantly to the Cathedral as a learning community. He is a priest of real pastoral wisdom, whose care has been appreciated by many, and his ministry is marked by a bias to the poor and marginalised. We wish him and Rosemary the very best in retirement.’

Chris’ role has involved working with many colleagues and volunteers at the Cathedral and across the Diocese. In particular he has been responsible for theological training. At the Cathedral he has overseen the development of the Christian Learning Group, which runs a monthly lecture programme on Tuesday evenings. He was instrumental in the relocation of the Cathedral Library to its current site in Abbey House, near the Abbey Gate, which provides a first class theological library for all. In addition he has encouraged the greater visibility of the Ancient Library, the oldest parish library in the country. Books from this collection can now regularly be seen at open days or in the Treasury.
