How To Get Involved

Independents’ Day UK is a national campaign that independent retailers across all sectors can use to promote their businesses, both online and within their local communities. Our Bury St Edmunds BID encourages local independents to make the campaign their own, using it as a platform to showcase what makes their business unique. Whether it’s through special offers, social media posts or in-store promotions.

Independents’ Day is a campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on two key days, Friday and Saturday July 4th-5th.

Independents account for something in the order of 65% of the approximately 290,000 retail outlets in the UK and are at the heart of local communities throughout the country.

  • In Bury St Edmunds independent business are located throughout the town centre making up nearly 60% of the town’s businesses.

  • With almost 300 independent businesses in Bury St Edmunds town centre, they play a critical role in the local economy.

  • Independent businesses are one of the reasons that Bury St Edmunds is such a wonderful place to live, work and shop and are the reason many residents and visitors cherish our town centre.

  • Research has shown that for every pound spent in a small or medium sized business, around 63p stays in the local economy compared to only about 40p per pound at a big brand store, and according to the Federation of Small Businesses, it’s these enterprises that provide around 60% of the employment opportunities in the UK private sector. 

  •  Independent retailers offer choice, diversity of product and service, tradition as well as innovation, and a more personal service to customers. They are also job creators and contributors to local and national economies, and with retail spending under pressure, never have they needed our support more.

  • Every year the BID supports Independents’ Day, a campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on two key days. It is a time to remind everyone that shopping local is one of the easiest ways to help our town centre economy.
