The Guildhall

Address Guildhall Street, Bury Saint Edmunds IP33 1PR, UK

Situated on Guildhall Street, a 3-minute walk from the Buttermarket, this beautifully preserved building dates back to 1279, and is the oldest continuously-used civic building in Britain. It offers a choice of unique and beautiful spaces for hire and is perfect for weddings, private functions, corporate and community events of all sizes.

Spend a while in our beautiful walled garden or sensory garden area – perfect for garden parties, or welcome drinks after your wedding ceremony. The octagonal gazebo gives shelter from the sun (or rain!) the garden is colourful all year round and is an excellent back drop for photographs that will remind you of your visit for many years.

The Guildhall also contains Britain’s only surviving WWII Royal Observer Corps Operations Room – an unsung group of local heroes who were the ‘eyes and ears of the RAF’ during the Battle of Britain. Their story has been hidden behind a veil of secrecy for over 80 years, but now it’s all been declassified for you to explore!

Discover the stories of the remarkable people who worked in the Ops Room on open days throughout the year or book a private tour to explore the history of this unique building and the people of Bury St Edmunds over 800 years. We also offer a range of cultural events including exhibitions, talks, concerts, and workshops.

Opening times: Office opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm. The venue is open to the public during scheduled events only, which will be advertised on our website.
