Where to enjoy a meal this Veganuary in Bury St Edmunds

Veganuary is a great time to try new food and test a plant-based diet, especially in Bury St Edmunds.

As the Foodie capital of Suffolk, there are loads of great restaurants in town, with flavours from all over the world.

Amigos

Being vegan shouldn’t mean missing out on some of the best flavours from around the world. Amigos serves up some of the tastiest Mexican food in the country; with a full section of the menu dedicated to vegans, there is so much to choose from.

Starters include jackfruit wings and bean and cheese (vegan, of course) flouters. Mains include fajitas, chimichangas, which are deep-fried tortillas with chilli rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, and pico de gallo, crispy chilli tacos, avocado tacos, nachos, and a burrito. Most other main menu dishes include vegetarian options, for those that are not fully vegan, but still opt for meat-free meals. And what’s even better? Tuesdays are 2 for 1 on main meals, when you order a drink!

Edmundo Lounge

Edmundo Lounge also offers an extensive range of vegan options, from early morning to evening meals in Bury St Edmunds. Breakfast includes the big vegan breakfast, featuring veggie sausage, falafel, greens and peppers, hash browns, baked beans, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, vegan bacon and toast, the smashed avocado brunch, blt, and a variety of toasts.

Their main menu includes tasty dishes with wide inspiration, such as Moroccan aubergine flatbread, bang bang cauliflower, sweetcorn and black bean burrito, cheeseburger, and the Buddha bowl. With a range of sides, tapas, and puddings like the chocolate and raspberry torte or the passionfruit semifreddo, Edmundo Lounge will spoil you for choice. 

Mowgli Street Food

Mowgli is ‘about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices,’ and vegans can still enjoy the great flavours from the streets of India with their extensive vegan menu. Starters include Bhel Puri, Fenugreek Kissed Fries, Treacle Tamarind Fries and the Mowgli Chip Butty, which features a roti wrap, fenugreek kissed turmeric fries, chilli pickle, red onion, coriander, green chilli & Mowgli tomato relish.

For mains, be blown away by Holy Chow, the Vegan showstopper consisting of spiced chickpea, potato, spinach, fresh ginger & mango served in a loaf – great for sharing. Also available is the Mowgli Keema Karma, Tea Steeped Chickpeas and Tiffin Roulette (Indian School Tiffin), which includes 4 tiers of mystery vegetables and carbs.

Pizza Express

To taste a little bit of vegan Italy in Bury St Edmunds, enjoy a meal at Pizza Express. Pizzas include Mezze, Funghi di bosco, padana, giardiniera (Artichoke, mushrooms, red onion and black olives, with tomato, vegan mozzarella alternative, garlic oil and parsley), margherita, leggera giardiniera. Lighter meals include the Buddha bowl or pepperonata pasta. To finish, indulge in the stem ginger cake, or lime and basil sorbet.

Wagamama

Now claiming that 50% of their menu is Vegan-friendly, there is much to love at Wagamama. Start with ‘prawn’ crackers, edamame or vegetable gyozas. Sides include hot, sweet, honey-fried chicken, K-dogs, pulled shiitake mushroom, bang bang cauliflower and mushroom bao buns.

The mains feature chicken coconut curry, katsu curry, tofu raisukaree curry, with a coconut curry sauce, mangetout, peppers, onion, white rice, chilli, coriander, sesame seeds, and lime. There is also firecracker curry, ramen, tofu hot pot, yaki soba, and pad thai.

Bay Tree Cafe

Recent winners of the Good Food Blue Ribbon, the Bay Tree Cafe serves a range of delicious snacks, light bites and main meals to enjoy this veganuary in Bury St Edmunds.

Starters include carrot and ginger soup, tomato soup, spinach salad or Alpha & Omega salad. 

Sides and mains to indulge in are kimchi fries, regular fries, pasta vegetale, teriyaki rice bowl, including sauteed mixed vegetables, mix seeds, sweet chilli dressing, coleslaw and rice, and a roasted mushroom sandwich.

 

 

Valley Connection

Heading to Asia for the delicious flavours of India, Valley Connection has some delicious vegan-friendly options on its menu. Sides and starters feature Popadoms, Garlic Mushroom Bhuna, Sag Aloo, Vegetable Pakora, Samosa, Vegetable Pure and Kashmiri Mirch. Mains include Shabji Jalfrezi and Chef Special Anaj. Enjoy your main dish with tasty bread such as rooti, chapati, or paratha.

Sakura

Sakura brings a wide range of delicious Japanese-infused dishes, such as bento lunches, noodles, and rice, to Bury St Edmunds. 

For lunchtime, vegan maki bento, vegetable tempura bento, and vegetable curry bento boxes, the latter includes a variety of different vegetables served with an aromatic Japanese curry, white rice, miso soup, and a dressed side salad, are available.

Other mains include vegetable tempura curry (five vegetable tempura and carrot, potato, and onion served with an aromatic Japanese curry and white rice), vegetable fried noodles, and vegetable soup noodles. The vegetable combo sushi platter includes a selection of vegan nigiri and maki rolls.

Wrights

Great for lunch and brunch options, Wright’s has a selection of food suitable for vegans. The tasty chickpea and red pepper hash with vegan feta and homemade seitan bacon will fill you up for the first meal of the day. The porridge has a signature new flavour every single day, so just check with a member of staff. 

You could also enjoy toast with a choice of 3 toppings: Spanish beans, smashed avocado, vegan bacon, tomatoes, and garlic mushrooms. Lunch options such as sandwiches include a BLT (homemade bacon, applewood cheese, lettuce, and tomato), and vegetarian sandwiches or toastie options can also be made vegan, including the plum chutney and rocket and the truffle-infused mushroom and spinach sandwich. 

Cafe Kottani

At Cafe Kottani, you can enjoy Mediterranean flavours. Appetisers include hummus and pita or falafel, as well as gigantes and pita. Mains are hummus, veg and olive panini, falafel and hummus wrap, vegan mezze platter, mushroom Greek phyllo pies and a falafel salad of roast veggies, olives, sundried tomato and hummus.

Several other cafes, including Lotties, No 5, Baileys 2, and Costa, also serve a range of vegan homemade cakes and treats, chai lattes, matcha lattes, hot chocolates, teas, and coffees that can be substituted with soya, almond, oat, or coconut milk.
