The Ultimate Guide to the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Lights Event 2025

_

The festive season officially begins in Bury St Edmunds with one of the town's most magical evenings of the year, the Christmas Lights Event. On Thursday, 20th November, from 3pm to 8pm, this much-loved event will be back, filling the town centre with Christmas spirit! This year's Christmas Lights Event also falls on St Edmund's Day, making it even more special, with free children's craft workshops hosted by Crafty Foxes and the chance to meet St Edmund and his wolf, a perfect photo opportunity for the little ones!

What's Happening at the Light Event?

The streets around the Buttermarket and Cornhill will come alive with festive fun for all ages. Expect charity, craft, and gift stalls full of seasonal treats and handmade treasures, a great chance to start your Christmas shopping while supporting local causes.
Adding a sprinkle of magic, the enchanting Snow Lion, the Red Queen, and, new for this year, a magical Polar Bear will roam the crowds, joined by Santa and his sleigh. Local schools and community performers will take to the stage throughout the afternoon, spreading festive cheer with music and song. You’ll also find fairground rides at the Cornhill, perfect for children looking for a little thrill between performances.
And don’t miss the Glow in the arc event, running from 3pm–6pm, where little ones can enjoy face painting, snow show girls, a juggling angel, and a prize-filled tombola.

Festive Food and Drink Nearby

No celebration is complete without a little indulgence, and so why not make a stop in one of the cafés or restaurants to keep you warm and full throughout the evening?
Warm up with a delicious ruby hot chocolate from Lotties, or coffee from Procopio’s Pantry, or a Chai latte at No 5 Angel Hill, all within walking distance of the event.
For a festive lunch before the lights switch on, grab a table at The Corn Exchange for hearty pub classics or pop into Edmundo Lounge on Cornhill for small plates and comforting favourites. The Bay Tree Café and Cafe Nero are also lovely spots for a delicious, quick bite or a warm drink while you take in the Christmas buzz. And if you fancy some dinner out after, Francela, Giggling Squid, and Pommodoro all offer tasty menus just a short stroll from the main event area.
Once the lights are twinkling and the crowds begin to thin, why not continue the evening with a drink nearby? The Masons Arms is a great choice for a post-event pint, with its beautiful garden and selection of Greene King ales brewed right here in town. For a cosy, characterful setting, Oakes Barn offers craft ales, winter warmers, and friendly local vibes. Or step into Hopsters, one of Bury St Edmunds’ newest businesses.
