Discover the “Out of This World” Astronomy Trail in Bury St Edmunds
_Families and visitors to Bury St Edmunds can enjoy a fun and educational adventure with the “Out of This World” Astronomy Trail, a free town-centre activity celebrating the excitement of space exploration.
Organised by Our Bury St Edmunds BID and supported by the Bury St Edmunds Astronomy Association, the trail invites people of all ages to explore the town while learning fascinating facts about the universe. It has been created to mark the upcoming Artemis II mission, which will send astronauts around the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years.
A space-themed adventure through town
The trail works as a self-guided activity around the town centre. Perfect for families, curious minds and little explorers, it’s completely free to take part and a great excuse to enjoy the town while having some out-of-this-world fun.
Participating businesses will display special astronomy-themed posters and items in their windows. Your mission is to discover all 10 items and write down the location of each one on the competition form on the back page. Competition forms can be collected from participating businesses and town centre venues. Once completed, simply return your form as instructed for a chance to take part in the competition.
It’s a fun and engaging way to explore the town’s streets, discover interesting space facts, and perhaps find businesses you hadn’t noticed before. Like many of the trails organised in Bury St Edmunds, it encourages people to visit different parts of the town centre and can be completed over several days.
Fun for families and space fans
The Astronomy Trail runs from Saturday, March 28th to Sunday, May 31st, 2026, and is designed as a free activity for families to enjoy together. Those who complete the trail will have the chance to enter a prize draw, adding an extra element of excitement to the challenge.
The theme continues during the annual Our Bury St Edmunds Spring Fayre, taking place on Sunday, 24th May, and Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May, from 10 am to 4 pm on both days, where visitors can also enjoy astronomy-related workshops and activities with the Bury St Edmunds Astronomy Association.
Explore and learn at the same time
Events and trails like this are part of the ongoing work by Our Bury St Edmunds BID to bring people into the town centre and create engaging experiences for visitors throughout the year.
So if you’re in Bury St Edmunds this spring, why not follow the Astronomy Trail, discover something new about the universe, and enjoy a day exploring one of Suffolk’s most historic market towns?
