Discover five gems about Bury St Edmunds

Posted on Saturday, 5th September, 2015

Bury St Edmunds is one of the top places to visit in East Anglia and to show you why, we’ve shared a a few gems about the jewel in the crown of Suffolk.

  • Bury St Edmunds is home to two cinemas including Abbeygate Cinema, an independent cinema that delivers quality events, refined theatre-like experiences and a strong mix of art-house and mainstream films.
  • The country’s smallest pub, The Nutshell is located in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. The Nutshell has been serving beer since 1867 and with the home of Greene King just down the road, you’ll find a great selection of beers and ales to try. Count the currency on the ceiling and watch out for the resident cat!
  • The independent shopping streets of Bury St Edmunds are full of hidden gems. From clothing boutiques to interior designers and food shops, these historic streets are worth a visit when looking for places to visit in East Anglia, including Copeland Interiors, Six, Javelin, Kitchen Kave and Nicola Sexton, to name a few.
  • Pea Porridge is one of just two restaurants in Suffolk to have retained the Michelin BIB Gourmand award for the sixth time. This is the highest accolade the restaurant could achieve.
  • In 1214, a group of barons held a secret meeting in the Bury St Edmunds Abbey and it was during this meeting that the signing of the Magna Carta took place. In 2015, Bury St Edmunds celebrated the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta.
