There are 26 decorated bollards situated around the central area of the town.
The barons and clergy met at the High Altar of the Abbey here in Bury St Edmunds in 1214 to swear an oath of allegiance to each other to force King John to accept the Charter As a result of this historic event the motto of Bury St Edmunds remains to this day: ‘Shrine of a King, Cradle of the Law’.

The barons’ shields can also be seen in the Chancel of St Edmundsbury Cathedral and there is a commemorative Magna Carta plaque within the Abbey ruins in the Abbey Gardens
