Fairies set to break world record!...

Organisers of a World Record attempt in Bury St Edmunds are putting out a final call for people to join in on Thursday evening, with an effort to achieve the largest-ever gathering of fairies.

The town centre improvement organisation Bid4Bury is inviting everyone who comes into the town for late night shopping on 13th December to take part in the record-breaking challenge by dressing as a fairy.  A number of town centre shops and businesses will offer discounts to people participating in the record attempt and the event will support the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Chief Executive of Bid4Bury Mark Cordell said:  “Bid4Bury has already organised two very successful late night shopping and Christmas lights events but with two more to go we wanted to offer something different.  We will have all the usual free entertainment in the town centre too and all we need now is enough fairies to break the record.

“Although we have had a cold start to the week, the weather does look to be a bit milder on Thursday and we won’t mind if our fairies choose to wear a thermal vest under their wings.”

Participants in the record-breaking attempt may be any age and men, women and children will all be welcome.  To be counted for the record they must wear fairy wings, a tutu and tights or bare legs.   There is no charge to take part but bucket collections will be made during the evening to support the charity.  Fairy costumes are available from Dance Crazy on St John’s Street which is making a donation to Breakthrough Breast Cancer for each one sold.

Fairies taking part in the record attempt will be given discounts on the evening when shopping at: East; Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Palmers and Mountain Warehouse.  A face-painter in Cornhill Walk will paint fairies’ faces at no charge from 4.30pm and there will also be a winter wonderland fairy and toy soldier on stilts.

The World record attempt will take place at 5.30pm when all the fairies will gather in Charter Square and be counted to verify the record before a procession through the arc to the town centre.

Many shops in the town will be open until 8pm and car parking will be free from 4pm.
