Christmas at the Cathedral...

St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, is looking forward to welcoming thousands of visitors of all ages to sing carols and to hear traditional readings in the coming weeks.

The season of Advent starts on Sunday 29 November will the Advent Procession at 5 pm. The service begins with the Cathedral in darkness and as the service progresses more and more light is introduced.

The annual Carols by Candlelight service takes place at 7.00 pm on Saturday 19 December. This much-loved concert, which features music by the Cathedral choirs, is an important part of the Cathedral’s Christmas programme. A collection is taken for the work of the Children’s Society during the concert.

As well as carols services for several local schools, the Cathedral will hold a service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Wednesday 23 December at 7.00 pm. Then on Christmas Eve, there is a Crib service, particularly aimed at younger children and their families at 4.00 pm, followed by Midnight Mass at 11.00 pm to mark the First Eucharist of Christmas. On Christmas Day itself, there are services at 8.00 am and 10.00 am to mark this special day.

‘Light in the darkest places, joy for sadness, healing for hurts: these are the things we hope for and celebrate at Christmas,’ comments Canon Philip Banks, Precentor of St Edmundsbury Cathedral. ‘Christ’s birth is re-told in the beautiful words and music of our Cathedral services and we hope that all who come will be touched with a knowledge of God’s love, joy and peace.’

For full details of all Christmas services please see or pick up a leaflet in the Cathedral.
