Organ Festival 2015 at St Edmundsbury Cathedral...

The fifth annual Organ Festival is launched at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday 7 March 2015. Following the success of previous years, the Festival showcases well-known organists from far and wide, offering first-class organ music on the Cathedral’s Harrison and Harrison organ.

The first recital will be played by David Dunnett, Organist at Norwich Cathedral. The recital, which begins at 5.00 pm and is free of charge, will include works by Purcell, Bach, Franck and Messiaen.

‘The organ continues to thrill and delight players and listeners alike. I very much hope that visitors and locals will enjoy this Festival which is just part of our extensive music programme at the Cathedral,’ comments James Thomas, Director of Music at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

Each recital lasts about 70 minutes. Admission is free with a retiring collection. A picture-in-picture camera linkup enables the audience to see the organist’s hands and feet on large screens in the Nave.

As well as the concerts listed here, the Cathedral runs a weekly Friday recital series from April to October, including a monthly organ recital. Visitors are always welcome to join services, where the organ is heard nearly every day, fulfilling its liturgical role.

The Organ Festival continues throughout 2015 with recitals by David Humphreys, James Lancelot and Malcolm Archer as well as the Cathedral’s own musicians, Dan Soper and James Thomas. For full details of the Cathedral Organ festival, see
