Prisons Week 2014...

Prisons Week will be marked at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds on Sunday 16 November at the 10 am service when Dame Anne Owers, DBE, former HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, will be the speaker. After the service there will be a chance to join a Q&A session in the Cathedral Lecture Room, to which all are warmly invited.

Anne Owers is currently chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Prior to this she directed JUSTICE, the UK-based human rights and law reform organisation. In June 2008, she was appointed Chairman of Christian Aid, and opposed the Government's former proposal to build ‘Titan jails’. In 2010, she was appointed to the position of Chairman of Clinks, a charity that supports the work of the voluntary and community sector working with

offenders and their families. She is also a Trustee of The Butler Trust. She was appointed CBE in 2000 for her work in human rights and elevated to Dame Commander (DBE) in 2009.

A ‘Prisoners’ Week’ began in 1975, and was created by a committee consisting of Prison Chaplains and other Christians involved in work with prisoners and their families. It was formed to encourage prayer within churches and the wider Christian community for the needs of prisoners. Over the years the movement has gained momentum and now has full ecumenical status, seeking to focus attention not only on the needs of prisoners but on all those involved in the field of prison care – prisoners’ families, victims of crime, prison staff and many volunteers. Now called Prisons Week, its primary aim is to pray for and raise awareness of the needs of prisoners and their families, victims of offenders, prison staff and all those who care.
